The Community Assistance and Resource Effort (CARE) Closet

The CARE Closet is a “confidential mobile food pantry” stocked with non-perishable items for students in Gwinnett County high schools who are in need of extra food at home. The CARE Closets are located in the counselor’s offices or in other isolated and confidential areas where students can go in and receive food items that they are in need of and can take home to their families.

One of the main points to be stressed about the CARE closet is that it is a 100% confidential process. The only people that will ever know that a student is in need are the school counselors/lead teachers or administrators.  Also, the pantry will be mobile (on wheels) and could be located in different areas to maintain the confidentiality. Through advertisement to the teachers, who see their students five days a week and know their behaviors and backgrounds, teachers will be able to then advertise the CARE Closet to specific students that they know are truly in need.

We will be collecting ONLY non-perishable foods, such as:

  1. Starches i.e. rice, pasta, instant potatoes, grits, etc.
  2. Sauces i.e. pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, etc.
  3. Seasonings
  4. Breakfast items i.e. instant oatmeal, breakfast bars, etc.
  5. Any canned foods (including any canned vegetables, soups, tuna, canned meats, etc.)

We especially enjoy receiving items that require very little preparation as many of the students we serve do not have access to full service kitchens.  So, items that can be prepared with a microwave or that only require water are GREAT to include with your other donations.

The beauty of this food pantry is that it is maintained by fellow students. Each month, a different school club will “adopt” the pantry and will be responsible for maintaining the pantry for that month. The closet maintenance includes stocking it with the donations, organizing the donations, and discarding the expired items.  This type of effort will not only provide food for some students, but it will also create a culture of school unity – where every student is their brother’s or sister’s keeper and no one should be walking alone in their journey through childhood and adolescence.
